Department of Hospitality Management, San Francisco State University This paper attempts to provide a better understanding of mainland Chinese outbound travel to Hong Kong, which has increased tremendously over the last few years. The main causes of this considerable increase are China's economic boom and the political relaxation allowing its citizens to go to Hong Kong and neighbouring countries. Given the huge tapped potential for outbound tourism in China relating to its rising economic position in the world, the results of this study, apart from theoretical interests, may have important implications for Hong Kong's tourism industry.
