A sociodemographic and trip profile of Kentucky visitors based on their gaming activity and destination-specific behaviour

Desmond O. Brown

With the growing trend of land-based casino development in many southern states of the USA, there is a growing debate among Kentucky residents, developers and politicians regarding the introduction of land-based casinos in the state. Based on recent examples from neighbouring states and the tone of public discourse, it seems inevitable that this form of gaming will be introduced in Kentucky. This study attempts to profile the sociodemographic and trip characteristics of current vacationers to Kentucky in an attempt to predict a typology of product class activity (visiting Kentucky casinos). The results reveal four main types of visitors: those who do not participate in gaming and would not visit a casino resort; those who do not participate but would visit; those who participate but would not visit, and those who participate and would visit.

Key Words: land-based casinos • Kentucky • gaming • segmentation • sociodemographic
